Welcome to ThinkingLogically.com, my new blog to discuss science, technology, society, education, diet/nutrition/wellness (I figure they are related to science) and basically anything I think of combining these issues. I was motivated to start this blog because I am an avid reader of these types of articles and I thought it might be fun to throw my point of view to the rest of the world. So… let’s begin!
Today there was an article on reuters.com about diet, health, and the disconnect between what Americans know and what they actually do. The article was here. Several items brought up in the article struck me as amazing, such as the lack of understanding of the types of fats that should be reduced in the diet, that most people (90%) agree that breakfast is important but considerably fewer actually eat breakfast (49%). I also found it interesting that while a large number (84%) of respondants performed some sort of activity (exercise, walking, etc.) at least once a week, far fewer (44%) ” ‘balanced diet and physical activity’ for weight management” The whole concept of balancing calories in and calories out seems to be missing from Americans’ understanding.
Here is where I believe thinking logically can help. If more people think through a problem or information logically and rationally, then they can cut through the hype and actually make a difference in their lives. But maybe part of the issue is the overall lifestyle we have: we’re all so go-go-go that we never seem to take time to THINK. Maybe we need to work on changing our lifestyles, to shut off the TV or the iPod or the other zillions of information inlets and spend time processing the information we receive!
I suspect this will be a theme I’ll return to… stay tuned!
